Welcome

On the North Coast, the focus of weed management is of a preemptive nature - finding and containing weeds that are new to the area, or which are present in very low numbers, and preventing their establishment. This contemporary weed management makes a significant contribution to the sustainability of the region, its landscape and the communities it supports by ensuring a strategic approach to the management of invasive plants in the region.

The North Coast covers the area from Port Macquarie Hastings Council area in the south to the Queensland border. The region is one of the fastest growing areas in NSW and also boasts some of the highest biodiversity values in the state. The region is characterised by fertile, volcanic and alluvial soils and has the highest rainfall of any area in the state. Combined with a subtropical climate which provides an extended growing period, these features render the region as possibly the most vulnerable part of NSW to the invasion of new plant species and further the proliferation of existing weeds.

Eight local control authorities deliver responsibilities under the Noxious Weeds Act 1993 across thirteen local government areas. They are Rous County Council, Clarence Valley Council, Coffs Harbour City Council, Bellingen Shire Council, Nambucca Shire Council, Kempsey Shire Council, Port Macquarie Hastings Council and the Lord Howe Island Board
